Iola Public Library adult programs for July begin with the Intrepid Readers book discussion group, which will discuss “Cherokee America” by Margaret Verble.

It’s 1875 and Check Singer is a Cherokee Nation matriarch with five sons, the wife of a dying husband and the manager of her family’s successful potato farm.

This new family saga, a prequel to Pulitzer-finalist “Maud’s Line,” is packed with subplots, details about life in the Nation when it was a sovereign land, and the rules of Cherokee culture, spoken and unspoken, that have been passed down for generations. It is a study of both character and culture. Because July 4 falls on a Thursday this year, the Intrepid Readers will meet one day earlier than usual, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

“Make Sugar Baby Body Scrubs” is at 2 p.m. July 11. Participants will mix up something fresh, fragrant and skin-smoothing and take it home in a pretty package. Patsy Smeed of Summit Hill Gardens, Chanute, provides botanical ingredients in a choice of four fragrances and shows everyone how. The program is for ages 9 and up. Advance registration and a $6 fee are required by July 8.  This program is in the Flewharty-Powell Annex, 211 East St.

At the July Pinterest Party, participants will make a multi-tier farmhouse stand for the kitchen.  The class is limited to 25 people. Pre-registration and fee of $3 are required by July 12.  The program is at 6 p.m. July 15.

Deb Greenwall will share stories and first hand experiences at “Hello Japan” on at 7 p.m. Aug. 19. She will display several items she has collected from Japan, while discussing Japanese culture, tradition, and cuisine.
